The result is a mathematical estimate. Actual loan payments may differ because lenders can apply different rates, fees, taxes, insurance, rounding methods or repayment rules.
EMI Formula: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1)

P = Principal amount
r = Interest rate per payment period
n = Total number of payments

Why Compare EMI Scenarios?

Changing the loan amount, interest rate or tenure can change both the periodic payment and total interest.

Shorter Tenure

A shorter tenure can increase the payment amount while potentially reducing the overall interest paid.

Longer Tenure

A longer tenure may reduce the periodic payment but can increase total interest.

What Is EMI?

EMI commonly stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is a periodic payment used in many loan structures. An EMI generally includes a portion toward the original principal and a portion representing interest.

The exact way a lender calculates and collects payments depends on the specific loan agreement. This calculator provides a standard mathematical estimate based on the values entered.

How Does an EMI Calculator Work?

An EMI calculator takes the loan principal, interest rate and repayment tenure and applies a standard fixed-payment formula. For a monthly EMI, the annual interest rate is converted to a monthly rate and the number of years is converted into the total number of monthly payments.

The calculator then determines the periodic payment that would mathematically repay the principal and calculated interest over the selected term under the assumptions of the formula.

Loan Amount

The loan amount is the principal amount being borrowed. A larger principal generally results in a larger EMI when the interest rate and tenure remain unchanged.

Interest Rate

The interest rate is one of the main factors affecting EMI. A higher rate generally increases both the periodic payment and the total interest under the same loan assumptions.

Loan Tenure

Loan tenure is the time allowed for repayment. A shorter tenure generally means fewer payments and may result in a larger EMI. A longer tenure can reduce the periodic payment while potentially increasing the total interest.

Example EMI Calculation

Suppose a borrower enters a loan amount of ₹500,000, an annual interest rate of 8.5% and a five-year tenure. The calculator uses those values to estimate the monthly payment and overall repayment.

The result is an estimate and should not be treated as a guaranteed quote from a bank, lender or financial institution.

EMI Formula Explained

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1)

P is the principal amount.
r is the periodic interest rate.
n is the total number of payment periods.

What Is Total Interest?

Total interest is the estimated amount paid above the original principal under the calculation assumptions. It can be calculated by taking the total of all periodic payments and subtracting the original principal.

What Is Total Repayment?

Total repayment is the estimated sum of all periodic payments over the selected loan tenure.

It may not include external costs such as processing fees, taxes, insurance premiums, penalties or other charges that may apply to an actual financial product.

Why Can Actual EMI Differ From a Calculator Result?

A real lender may calculate interest using a different method or schedule. Other factors can also affect the actual amount, including floating interest rates, processing fees, insurance, taxes, rounding and changes in repayment terms.

Fixed Rate vs. Changing Rate

This calculator assumes that the interest rate remains unchanged throughout the calculation. Some real loans may have rates that change over time.

When a loan has a changing interest rate, the actual future payment or remaining interest can differ from an initial estimate.

How to Use an EMI Calculator

  1. Enter the loan amount.
  2. Enter the annual interest rate.
  3. Enter the loan tenure.
  4. Select the payment frequency.
  5. Click Calculate EMI.
  6. Review the estimated EMI, interest and total repayment.

Tips for Comparing EMI Scenarios

  • Compare the same loan amount across different tenures.
  • Compare different interest rates.
  • Look at total interest, not only the EMI.
  • Review the actual lender's terms before deciding.
  • Consider additional charges not represented by a basic calculator.

Is This EMI Calculator Financial Advice?

No. It is a general mathematical calculator intended for estimation and comparison. It does not examine personal income, credit history, financial obligations or suitability for a particular loan.

Privacy and Browser Processing

The calculation is performed directly in the browser. The loan values entered into the calculator do not need to be sent to a remote calculation service.
