How Fat Mass Is Calculated

Estimated Fat Mass = Body Weight × Body Fat Percentage ÷ 100

For a 70 kg person with an estimated body fat of 20%:

70 × 20 ÷ 100 = 14 kg estimated fat mass

How Lean Mass Is Calculated

Estimated Lean Mass = Body Weight − Estimated Fat Mass

Using the same example:

70 − 14 = 56 kg estimated lean mass

Lean mass is not exactly the same thing as muscle mass. It includes other non-fat components of the body as well.
